SLEEP DISORDERS


Sleep disorder is a medical disorder that result in changes in the way one sleeps and causes overall damage to a lifestyle and health of a healthy and active person. The most common sleep disorders include Insomnia, Sleep Apnea, Parasomnias, Sleep Paralysis, Restless Legs Syndrome, Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, Shift Work Sleep Disorder, Hypersomnia and Narcolepsy.

It is linked with deep underlying psychiatric problems and can lead to anxiety, fear, and fretfulness.

Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) also known as Willis-Ekbom disease is a severe sleep disorder that causes a strong urge to move your legs because of an uncomfortable sensation, and moving them temporarily relieves the discomfort. It especially occurs at night when you are resting. It can lead to less concentration and incompetency at work because of depression and anxiety, mood swings and daytime sleepiness.

Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder

Non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder (N24) is a circadian rhythm sleep disorder during which a person’s sleep schedule is disturbed and he goes to bed late every night and waking up late each day. This sleep-wake pattern continues to move later and later every day resulting in serious and cumulative sleep deficiency that can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, depression, difficulty concentrating, and memory problems.

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

Periodic limb movement (PLMD) is a serious sleep disorder during which a person feels repetitive cramps or jerks in the legs and arms that’s causes disruption in his sleep. People with this disorder often wake up tired and exhausted. This disorder can lead to day time sleepiness, depression, Bad memory, Short attention span, Fatigue, hyperactivity and dull behavior at work.

Shift Work Sleep Disorder

Shift work sleep disorder is a condition that normally happens to people working in odd shifts i.e. other than 9:00 am-05:00 pm job. People with this disorder feel less refreshing and inactive because of excessive sleepiness. They get easily depressed and loses their concentration which affects their personal and social life. It can lead to many health issues like ulcers, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and heart disease.

Hypersomnia

Hypersomnia also known as Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS) is a sleep disorder during which a person has trouble staying up during the day. People with this disorder often take naps but of no use as they still feel inactive and sleepy. It can lead to serious health issues like loss of appetite, depression, hallucinations, obesity, decreased energy, slow thinking, and memory difficulty which affects one’s personal and professional life.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder during which a person feels extremely sleepy in the daytime. It also involves irregular sleep like waking up frequently during the night. This disorder can cause serious disruption in one’s life as people find it difficult to stay awake for a longer time, and may unwillingly fall asleep even if they are in the middle of something like talking, eating or driving.
